His main research interests are in soil science with a special focus on the study of soil organic fraction and soil degradation due to human pressure.
He is currently working of the following subjects: 1) Quantification of the pyrogenic carbon and characterization of the physical-chemical properties of the soil developed inside the abandoned charcoal hearths in relation to i) total carbon stock of the forest ecosystems; ii) the nutrients cycling inside the soil-vegetation system and iii) reconstruction of past forest exploitation activities. 2) Investigation of the chemical and physical properties of carbonized organic matter to propose it as a substitute for peat as growing medium for plants. He is co-supervising a PhD student on this subject collaborating with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). 3) Studying the ageing effect of charcoal buried in soil for evaluating the potential long-term effect of carbonized organic matter (biochar) in soil. He performed studies on: 1) Evaluation of biochar as soil amendment. The research was a field evaluation of biochar produced from cotton residues and its effects on soil properties and nutrient cycling in maize cultivation on Plinthosols in Burkina Faso. 2) Characterization of the natural pyrogenic organic matter. The research has regarded the formation of the pyrogenic organic matter during wildfires and its characterization applying different approaches involving physical and chemical fractionation and using several techniques as spectroscopy (vibrational and magnetic) and thermogravimetry. 3) Evolution of the soil organic matter and the humic fraction in a long-term experiment with the application of manure and digestate.
