Research topics may include coupled human and natural systems, telecouplings (socioeconomic and environmental interactions over distances through globalization, trade, migration, species invasion, water transfer, and other means), sustainability science, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services, human well-being, land change science, forest and landscape ecology, global change, systems integration (e.g., integration of ecology with demography, economics, sociology, technology, and policy), ecology and management of wildlife (e.g., giant pandas in China), and systems modeling and simulation (e.g., agent-based modeling).
Papers on these topics by CSIS faculty and students have been published in journals such as Science, Nature, and PNAS (see http://csis.msu.edu/research/publications).

With flexible start dates, successful candidates can build on these previous studies and/or explore new frontiers of research. They will also have opportunities
to interact with leaders and peers in these fields worldwide through various ways, such as the International Network of Research on Coupled Human and Natural Systems
(CHANS-Net.org) and the NASA-MSU Professional Enhancement Awards Program (http://csis.msu.edu/education/nasa_msu_award), which are organized by CSIS.
More information about CSIS is available at http://csis.msu.edu.

Short-term International Fellowship in Oregon

The WFI International Fellowship brings professionals in natural resources-such as foresters, environmental educators, land managers, NGO practitioners, and researchers-to conduct a practical research project at the World Forestry Center. In addition to their specific projects, Fellows participate in weekly field trips, interviews and site visits to Northwest forestry organizations, parks, universities, public and private timberlands, trade associations, mills, and corporations. The Fellowship is a unique opportunity to learn about sustainable forestry from the Pacific Northwest forestry sector, and to work with colleagues from around the world. Fellowships are open to any country, and there is a matching grant from the Harry A. Merlo Foundation. Over 100 Fellows from 30 countries have participated to date.

ore 08.30 Ritrovo presso il parcheggio davanti al ristorante "Tosca" loc. Le Regine per iscrizione e organizzazione logistica per spostamenti;

ore 08.45 Trasferimento al Cecchetto, inizio giro in bosco per vedere interventi svolti con introduzione su selvicoltura d'albero per valorizzazione sporadiche;

ore 10.30 Arrivo martelloscopio, divisione in gruppi ed inizio simulazione martellata;

ore 12.15 Scambio tra i gruppi per poter visualizzare in bosco le scelte fatte nelle altre porzioni di martelloscopio;

ore 13.00 Trasferimento per il pranzo presso il ristorante "Tosca". Chi eventualmente volesse mangiare in altra forma alle 14.00 dovrà comunque raggiungere il resto del gruppo al ristorante dove proseguirà il seminario in "aula";

ore 14.00 Visualizzazioni grafiche di ciascun gruppo e spiegazione delle scelte fatte; confronto e dibattito;

PhD student position at Umeå University, Sweden

PhD student in computational science / precision forestry

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic PhD student to work within the project "Precision forestry of the future: enhanced forest management by optimized tree selection in thinning operations".

The project is about whether information on the size and location of individual trees can be used to increase productivity and sustainability in forestry. The PhD student will develop and validate an individual-based mathematical model of development of a forest, from young to mature. This model will be used to study the profitability and sustainability of different thinning strategies. A particular focus is the identification of optimal harvesting strategies. We further intend to develop models to estimate the cost of a thinning operation as well as to quantify the uncertainty associated with information gathering from laser scanning of trees (LiDAR).

The PhD student will work in the creative research environment IceLab.
Related research is already ongoing within this environment, with examples including studies of vegetation dynamics, sustainable use of living resources, spatial population dynamics, and numerical methods for structured population models. The research is interdisciplinary and builds on a combination of mathematics, ecology, physics, computer science, and applications.

For further information and instructions on how to apply, see www8.umu.se/umu/aktuellt/arkiv/lediga_tjanster/313-459-13.html

Your complete application, marked with reference number 313-459-13, should be sent to jobb@umu.se (state the reference number as subject) or to the Registrar, Umeå University, SE-901 87 Umeå, Sweden to arrive May 20, 2013 at the latest.
